How I Travel the World as a vegetarian
(and Why I Built Veggie Trip)
For as long as I can remember, travel has been a huge part of my life. And long before “vegan-friendly” filters, Google Maps, or clearly labeled menus, I was already figuring out how to navigate new countries as a vegetarian. Often by trial, error, and a lot of improvisation.
Over the past 20+ years, I’ve traveled to more than 20 countries as a vegetarian / sometimes vegan. At times it was easy and joyful. Other trips have been confusing, awkward, or exhausting. And almost every single time, I found myself asking the same questions before I went:
- Will I be able to eat there?
- What foods are usually safe?
- How do I explain my diet without offending anyone?
- Are there any common ingredients to watch out for? (Like fish sauce in Thailand)
- Do I need to head straight for a market for fruits and snacks?
No matter where I’m going… a big city, a remote village, or somewhere in between… I always find myself doing the same research.

Traveling Veggie Before It Was “Easy”
When I first started traveling, being plant-based wasn’t trendy or well understood. Menus rarely explained ingredients. Asking questions felt intimidating. In some places, “no meat” still somehow included fish (or chicken 😳). In others I learned to be ok with the fact that cheese or butter showed up everywhere.
I learned quickly that traveling vegan wasn’t about finding perfect vegan restaurants; it was about understanding local food culture, knowing what questions to ask, and learning how to adapt.
Markets became my safe place. Street food taught me what was flexible. Simple staples like rice, beans, bread, vegetables, tofu, and lentils saved me more times than I can count.
Over time, I stopped feeling anxious about food while traveling. I got better at reading between the lines, spotting patterns, and adjusting expectations. And I realized something important:
The hard part wasn’t the food; it was the lack of clear, honest information.

Why I built Veggie Trip
After years of planning trips the same way – country by country, note by note – it finally clicked.
I wasn’t looking for perfection.
I was looking for reassurance.
I wanted to know:
- Is this country doable as a vegetarian or vegan?
- Is it easy, moderate, or genuinely challenging?
- What foods can I rely on?
- What should I watch out for?
So I built Veggie Trip, the resource I wish existed every time I booked a flight.
Veggie Trip puts everything I personally look up before traveling into one place:
- How vegan or vegetarian-friendly a country really is
- What plant-based foods are commonly available
- Simple language phrases to help you communicate
- Honest expectations (no sugarcoating)
It’s not about telling you every restaurant and exactly what to order.
It’s about helping you feel prepared, confident, and excited to go.

Sharing Favorite Dishes & Recipes
Some of my favorite travel memories are tied to food: a simple market meal, a vegetable-based dish I didn’t expect to love, or a local specialty that just happened to be plant-based.
That’s why Veggie Trip isn’t only about survival tips.
Here, we’ll also be sharing:
- Favorite vegetarian and vegan dishes from around the world
- Naturally plant-based meals you’ll see again and again while traveling
- Simple, travel-inspired recipes you can recreate at home
Sometimes those recipes will be traditional. Sometimes they’ll be adaptations. Either way, they’re about staying connected to the places we travel — even after we return home.

Veggie Trip is for:

Whether you’re planning a short trip or slowly working your way around the globe, my goal is to make sure food doesn’t feel like a barrier.
A growing veggie travel community
I’m building Veggie Trip as a living, growing resource, and I don’t want it to be just mine.
I hope to collaborate with other veggie travelers, locals, writers, and creators who want to share knowledge, experiences, and tips. Travel is better when it’s shared, and plant-based travel is no exception.
If you have insights, stories, or perspectives to contribute, you’re already part of the community.
I hope Veggie Trip becomes the site all veggie travelers check before going anywhere.
If you’re the kind of traveler who does the same research every time, or wishes someone else already had, you’re in the right place.
I hope this site helps you travel with more ease, curiosity, and confidence.
